What book do you recommend for a beginning teacher?
Is there a Book Six in the ESL Phonics Series
There is a plan for book 6, Building Words, but it is still on the back burner. It covers plurals, possessive forms, silent letters, verb forms with ing and ed, compound words, and contractions.
Book 7 of ESL Phonics focuses on homonyms (bat, bat), homophones (bare. Bear), and homographs (sow, sow, read, read).
Is The New Boy Is Lost! the same as Where Is Taro?
Yes, it’s the same. It was originally published by Harcourt Brace, but when they ended their elementary ESL division, they gave me my rights back. I changed the name because some teachers thought the book was similar to Where Is Waldo? I wanted to have a title that told more of what the story is about.
Are the books photocopiable?
Some are, some are not:
You may photocopy sufficient copies for your own classes the following:
- The game pages of ESL Teacher’s Activities Kit (NOT the whole book!)
- All of ESL Teacher’s Holiday Activities Kit, Classroom teacher’s ESL Survival Kits # 1 and # 2 and Just-A-Minute! may be photocopied
- Your Health by Dr. Ali
- The Treasure Chest
- Feel free to make copies or change to MP3 of the Audio CDs for ESL Phonics for All Ages
The other books are NOT photocopiable except for Fair Use:
- Sample chapters and units posted at this website may be photocopied
- Fair Use Law allows you to photocopy one unit from each of the American Manners and Customs books, one chapter from Kristina, 1904
- The rest of the ESL Phonics books, ESL Wonder Workbooks, and Three Little Words are protected by copyright. They work best when a student can actually write in and keep the books.
If you wish to photocopy more pages than the above “Fair Use” please contact me at ESL@elizabethclaire.com with your reasons and for permission
Who is the audience for Kristina, 1904? Is it only for English language learners?
The audience for Kristina is for readers from ages eleven to adult, who can read at a high intermediate level of English. So, it’s for native English speakers, too
Is there a Teacher’s Guide for Kristina, 1904?
So far, there is no Teacher’s Guide for Kristina. Sorry
What happens next to Kristina? Will there be a sequel?
If there are many requests for a particular book, I get the energy to write it. In life, Kristina’s three sisters come one by one to the United States and the four of them enjoy many activities in New York City on their days off. Kristina learns English and gets a better job. At 18, she marries and moves with her husband to Pennsylvania, where he becomes a coal miner, and they undergo hardships there
Why does Book 5 of ESL Phonics for All Ages dealing with short vowels come after the long vowels in Book 4? Shouldn’t you teach the short vowels before long vowels?
The short vowels are difficult for English language learner to distinguish. They can easily hear the difference between the five long vowels. E does not sound like A, I, or O. But with sixteen short vowel sounds, pin and pen might sound the same to beginning English learner. The sound of a in hat is difficult to distinguish from o in hot, or u in hut, as most other languages do not have an ae sound. The books are ordered the way they are because easy sounds come before difficult sounds
